Riverbreeze: Thursday, September 9th
Posted on August 27, 2010 · Leave a CommentWhat would summer be like without the ultimate food and wine festivals? I think that there have been at least 20 food and wine festivals and events around the Downtown Jeffersonville and Louisville area. Of course, we couldn’t send summer packing without having at least one or two more food and wine festivals. Coming up on September 9th will be the Riverbreeze, an event where you can sample foods and wines in a great setting.
This is only one of the great events that are going on for the rest of the year in downtown Jeffersonville. Even though Louisville is very close, about 15 minutes away from Orchard Hills Apartments, you may not feel like going that far from your front door step, so that’s where Riverbreeze and events like it come into play. Here are some other events going on soon:
- Sept 11-12: RiverWalk Art-Tiques Fest
- Oct. 9 : Sugar Maples Fall Festival
- Oct. 15 : Hops, Shops, and Chardonnay

Apartment Living Tips: Decorating Your Balcony
Posted on August 25, 2010 · Leave a CommentHave you ever looked out your balcony window, only to wish that your balcony had a bit more pizazz? If you’re unsure of how you want to decorate your balcony at the Orchard Hills Apartments or you need some tips to spur you along, here are a few starters, courtesy of Suite101.com:
- Your balcony can be seen as an extension to your living room. Adding a few key furniture pieces can make a balcony seem warm and inviting. Depending on the size of your balcony, you can add a few chairs, and even a small table to make it more comfortable.
- Add some greenery. Potted plants, whether real or fake, are a great way to make a balcony come alive. Hanging plants are good because they take up virtually no space, leaving you more room to decorate, and they add a living quality to the space.
- Lay outdoor flooring. Outdoor flooring is a great way to define a space, and it looks better than the concrete flooring of most balconies. You can also add a splash of color this way.
- Add some mood lighting. If there is an electrical outlet outside, you can string holiday/party lights along your balcony. Or, you could head to your local garden center and get some outdoor lighting to brighten up the area at night.
These are just a few tips to get you started. I’d love to hear what other suggestions you may have!
Fun For All at the Kentucky State Fair!
Posted on August 20, 2010 · Leave a CommentThere’s so much to do at the Kentucky State Fair! Okay, so I know that Orchard Hills Apartments aren’t technically in the state of Kentucky, but it’s close enough! You’ll be glad to know that it’s so close, this means that you can take part in everything that the Kentucky State Fair has to offer, which started yestersday, the 19th and will run until August 29 at the Kentucky Exposition Center.
So, what can you expect from the Kentucky State Fair? Plenty: Deep-fried Twinkies, the welcoming smile of 18-foot-tall Freddy Farm Bureau, those slice-it-dice-it-veg-o-matic guys in South Wing C, an ugly-lamp contest, jams and jellies, heifers and hogs, carnival games and rides and sweltering temperatures just to name a few.
For those who have been to the fair before, certain favorites are returning such as the Main Street Kentucky, Heritage Hall, World’s Championship Horse Show, Miller’s Border Collies, but there are new exhibits as well.
There’s something else that’s new at the fair, and it’s the Luther Burger. Well, that’s what they call it down-south. The Luther Burger is essentially a ham or cheeseburger with the buns being two Krispy Kreme Doughnuts. Such gustatory indulgence awaits fairgoers daily in a kiosk in front of Freedom Hall. The doughnut burger costs $6.50 or $7 with cheese. A doughnut cheeseburger with bacon costs $8. Don’t worry, it looks worse than it sounds.
There are shows to mystify and entertain, things to keep teenagers and youngsters entertained, dance moves to make your head hurt, and free food in some areas. What more could you ask for?!
So gather up your friends and family, and head out to the Kentucky State Fair!

I Scream, You Scream!: Ice Cream Social in Downtown Jeffersonville
Posted on August 18, 2010 · Leave a CommentHey all of you over at Orchard Hills Apartments! The sun is still blazing isn’t it? Well, this may help you to beat the heat, if not for one day only. On August 28 from 1 pm to 4 pm there will be an Ice Cream Social in Downtown Jeffersonviile.
What better way can you cool down on a hot summer day than with a scoop of your favorite ice cream? What about if you can sample more than one flavor? When you visit Downtown Jeffersonville on the 28th, you’ll be able to shop and sample 12 different flavors of ice cream. One of the featured ice cream providers will be Gelato Gilberto. In a way, many people like Gelato better than ice cream. They say that the flavors are more versatile, and it doesn’t coat your tongue like ice cream, so you get a better taste of the flavor. I don’t know, I think I’ll stick with my Breyers.
What else can you expect at the ice cream social? There will be live music (of course), as well as huge sales at certain shops in the area. So mark your calendars! We know you love living here at Orchard Hills apartments and can stay indoors all day, but it’s good to get out and get some fresh air! So remember, Saturday, August 28th from 1 pm to 4 pm.
What’s your favorite kind of ice cream?

This Week On DVD: Date Night and Death at a Funeral
Posted on August 13, 2010 · Leave a CommentHey Orchard Hills! Thinking of expanding your DVD collection? If so, you have two great movies to add to your library: Date Night and Death at a Funeral.
I’ve seen Date Night multiple times, and it’s always a laugh riot. Anything that Steve Carell is in just screams funny. He and Tina Fey star as Phil and Claire Foster, a sensible, loving husband and wife slogging through their daily lives and marriage in suburban New Jersey. When trying to spice up their married life, the two run into a load of trouble: small-time thieves, big-city mobsters, corrupt cops and a crazed cabbie to say the least.
Death at a Funeral escaped me: I haven’t seen it yet, but with an all-star cast like it has, I’m sure that it’s funny as well. Chris Rock, Martin Lawrence, Tracy Morgan, Zoe Saldana, Luke Wilson, Danny Glover and Peter Dinklage lead a crazy comedic cast in the hilarious tale of a not-so-average American family coming together to put a beloved husband and father to rest.
Check out the trailers for both below, and pick them up from wherever you buy DVDs today!

Keep Your Pets Cool This Summer
Posted on August 4, 2010 · Leave a CommentHey Orchard Hills! It’s hot out there and only getting hotter! While I’m sure you now how to keep cool in this summer heat, but what about your more furry family members? That’s right, your pets can get just as tired, dehydrated, and overheated as you can. The main disadvantage for them is that they can’t sweat.
Since you love your pet pals so much, you have to make sure that they are as cool as possible when out in the sun. Just like you, your pets need shade and plenty of water. Here are a few guidelines that may help your pets beat the summer heat:
- When out with pet’s at parks or visiting friends, make sure that you find a shady area for you and your pet to rest in.
- Animals get very dehydrated very quickly, so keeping a bottle of water for you and a separate one for you pet when traveling to and fro is a great idea. Putting ice cubes in their water dish is also a good idea.
- With small dogs, consider buying a small wading pool (small enough for your balcony) for your dog to take a quick dip in to cool off.
I hope this helps! Stay safe, and be cool!

What Would You Get w/$40 at Mikato Steak and Sushi?
Posted on July 30, 2010 · Leave a CommentHey Orchard Hills! How great is the internet? You can find almost anything, even deals on food and clothing. Today, I found a great deal on the internet for Mikato’s Steak and Sushi. With this internet coupon, for just $20 you can buy $40 worth of food at Mikato’s Steak and Sushi.
Are you on the sushi bandwagon? It still amazes me that it got so popular so quickly. Granted, most people that I know stick with California rolls, which really isn’t accepted as real sushi in the Asian countries. But with this discount, you can try you hand at all kinds of different sushi.
With this deal, you can set up shop at one of ten hibachi grills at this steak, sushi, and seafood eatery and watch as a chef slices and dices your dinner. Domo arigato, Mr. Mikato. (Couldn’t resist
